Trends in the energy sector
Over the past 5 years, the energy sector has been the fastest-growing and perhaps the most important sector worldwide. The war in Ukraine and constant swings in generation costs, combined with the broader shift toward renewable sources, have convinced even the last holdout among consumers and businesses that there is a comprehensive and real need to change the way energy is managed and generated.
Several governments, especially those in the so-called Western world, have for years had plans in place to phase out lignite and shift to green solutions, while the events of recent years have highlighted, as never before, the need to end dependence on fossil fuels for geopolitical and military reasons.
The shift toward local renewable energy sources is no longer assessed in purely economic terms, while the parallel drop in the average cost of building a solar or wind farm has made generation, storage and management projects more attractive to investors today than ever before.
In Greece, as in Europe, there are clearly defined targets for the transition to renewable sources, with horizons from 2025 to 2050. That is why we have seen a huge rise in investment in this sector, and it is certain to continue over the next 5 to 10 years.
Subsidized programs
Households and businesses have now joined in as well, through various programs that subsidize the installation of self-consumption solar (PV) systems using so-called net metering.
Recently, the Greek Ministry of Environment and Energy (YPEN) changed the framework and finally allowed what is known as virtual net metering, which essentially lets an energy producer “store” energy in the grid and use it at a different location, either for their own use or as a service to someone else.
These projects can range from relatively simple home or office installations, with solar panels, dedicated solar inverters and possibly a battery system, to highly complex projects that create a dedicated energy generation and storage station (grid-scale), where a systematic study of the requirements and of the construction and maintenance process is essential.
