What network components are: patch cables and cords, patch panels and switches, the CAT categories and the difference between UTP and STP cables.
By Network Components we mean all the networking elements needed to connect two or more devices physically and logically; they make it possible to transfer data and power from one device to another in order to share resources and exchange information.
Some of the basic components are:
Patch Cables – Cords, special cables that “patch in”, i.e., connect devices that communicate with each other, carrying power and data at speeds and performance levels measured in CAT categories (Cat 5, Cat 5e, Cat6, Cat 6a, Cat 7, etc.). In terms of protection from electromagnetic interference (EMI) and noise, there are shielded twisted pair cables (STP) and unshielded twisted pair cables (UTP).
Patch Panels – special panels – a termination point for Patch Cables that helps manage large numbers of cables. They are essential for network installations, telephone systems (PBX), security and camera systems, etc.
The Network Switch is a device that connects different segments of a network, providing full two-way communication between them and improving their performance. It does this by forwarding the information “packets” that arrive at its ports to the ports leading to the devices those packets are intended for.
