Tips to maximize the service life of your UPS

The batteries of a UPS have a rated service life of 3 to 5 years when they operate within specific, recommended conditions.

But what are these conditions, and to what extent can they actually affect the battery life of your UPS? Even more important is the question of how you can make sure that the life cycle of the UPS unit itself is maximized.

The location of the UPS unit, the temperature and the frequency of discharge cycles are three factors of paramount importance for the life expectancy of UPS systems and their batteries. By following a few simple tips, you can make sure you get the maximum performance out of your unit.

Placing the UPS unit

It is best not to place the UPS unit near open windows or in areas with high humidity. The environment should be free of dust and corrosive fumes. In addition, the ventilation openings on the front, sides and back of the UPS should not be blocked, so that air can circulate properly and the unit does not overheat.

Temperature

According to technical specifications, most UPS systems have a recommended operating temperature between 0°C-40°C. However, while many people feel confident that their unit will not go beyond the predefined temperature limits, they overlook the fact that there are ideal, recommended conditions for the UPS, which involve temperatures from 15°C up to 25°C. Another general rule worth remembering is that for roughly every 10°C above 25°C, the service life of both the UPS and its battery is reduced by 50%.

Discharge cycle

When a power outage occurs, the UPS automatically switches the load of your devices from the main grid to the battery. When utility power is restored, the UPS immediately starts recharging the battery, so that it is ready again in case of a similar event. This process is known as the battery discharge cycle. The more often discharge cycles occur, the sooner your unit's battery will wear out.

Although recharging is an unavoidable part of UPS operation, it is important to be aware of it, so that you can spot any unnecessary and abnormal discharge cycles. The tips above deserve attention, since the UPS systems that last longest are those that receive proper management and maintenance, which is recommended once a year.
